Sattvic Foods – There is where We Have to Focus on!

The sattvic diet is “sweet, fresh and agreeable” and consist mostly from fruits, seeds, nuts, vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, whole grains, honey, pure water and milk (with the caveat that milk produced commercially will most likely not be Sattvic…)
It’s always better chose organic food, but if you have no choice, at least don’t eat processed chemical frozen or canned foods.
Rajasic food still feeds your body but in the long term it will damage your health. This king of food encourages activity and because of that causes restlessness of mind. It disturbs the equilibrium of the mind and if you want to be a great and healthy yogi avoid it! Rajasic foods are: Spicy foods, artificial stimulants like tea and coffee, eggs, onion, garlic, meat, fish, refined sugars (cookies, chocolate) and all kind of processes foods.
The next type of food is Tamasic food. Avoid that food at any cost. This food will lower your energy levels; it will cause heaviness of the body and dullness of the mind. You can not obtain any benefits from this food whatsoever. I’m talking about alcohol and food that is stale or overripe. And overeating is also tamasic. One of the keys for longevity and perfect health of the ancient Yogis is to fill the stomach half with food, one quarter with water, leaving the last quarter empty.
Tamasic foods are meat, fish, eggs and alcohol, overciooked and processed canned and packaged foods
In one of the greatest spiritual scriptures of all times “The Bhagavad Gita” Lord Krishna teaching yoga to His friend and disciple Arjuna we read:
“Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them:
Foods dear to those in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one’s existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction.
Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome, and pleasing to the heart.
Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. Such foods cause distress, misery and disease.
Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness” (End of citation)
You have to consider cooking. Cooking can change the nature of food. For example, grains become sattvic after you cook them. Honey becomes toxicant if you cook it. The constitution of food can change also depending on how you combine it with other foods and spices. What to Eat, How Much To Eat And When In Order To Lose Weight With Yoga?

The first thing is What to eat? I think pretty much I answered this question above, you have to strive for sattvic foods. And what are sattvic foods? I will list some of them bellow:

You have plenty of foods there to make hundreds of super tasty and healthy recipes, so that with little bit of imagination and research you wouldn’t need to eat any other tamasic or rajasic foods.
How Much To Eat in Order to Lose Weight With Yoga:
Here’s how it works: Whenever you eat fill a standard 23cm (9inch) dinner plate and fill it half with raw vegetables you like. Or you can substitute the vegetables with 1 – 2 peaces of fruit (ideally for breakfast).
Fill the other half with equal portions of carbohydrate (rice, potatoes etc) and protein foods (cheese, nuts etc) if you are vegetarian and (chicken, fish etc) if you are not, along with teaspoon of fat (olive oil, flax-seed oil etc.). after you finish if you are still hungry, you can have another plate of vegetables. That’s it! Easy isn’t it? Ok let’s carry on;
When to Eat?
The key is to eat 5 “mini” meals throughout the day, each one separated by 3 hors approx.
So the perfect eating schedule would be:
Snack at 10.00am
Lunch at 1.00pm
Snack at 4.00pm
Dinner at 7.00pm
Of course this can be adjusted to your own needs, but you already have the idea.
And finally why you should stop eating at least 3 hours before go to bed.
When the night approaches and the sun goes down each day, your body your body’s temperature begins to drop and the vital functions like heartbeat and begin to slow down and prepare to sleep.
If you are in rhythm with nature you will be able to rest and repair your body more fully during your night sleep. If you eat close to your sleep your digestive system will have to work during the night and you won’t be able to rest properly. If you eat too late your body will spent too much energy in digestion instead of repairing your muscle tissue and you won’t be able to recover.
As we have said before eat sattvic foods, eat only fresh food, recently prepared and you will be good to go. When you eat, don’t read or watch TV. Eat your food with attention respect and gratitude. Eat to live, don’t live to eat, food should be tasty, so as to be appreciated. As you are on your path of self realization you should know so far that everything is energy vibrating. So the mood of the person preparing the food is very important as well.
I see that over and over again, somebody prepare a food with the absolutely the same ingredients and in the same way as another person and the food taste so differently. Why is that? Well, pretty simple, the attitude and the mood of the person who prepare the food affect the food directly.
Most Indians still prefer their lunch box prepared at home to lunch in a restaurant for this reason, and some yogis only eat food prepared by themselves or other yogis.
To be or Not to Be Vegetarian?…
That is the question. Here Ill be totally honest with you. You can still lose weight doing Yoga, and eating meat but…get this: Meat and fish are listed among the food specially harmful for Yoga. (Hatha Yoga Pradipika I, 59). Eating the flesh of dead animals violates the first principle of yogic ethics (yamas) as laid down by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, that of non- violence (ahimsa). As well in the Bible Jesus Christ clearly says: You shall not kill! It is said clearly “…not kill” he didn’t say “not kill people”, so this is valid for all living creatures.
Many ancient Yogic scriptures says that the fear of death permeate every cell the body of an animal when it is slaughtered, therefore if you want to be a healthy and flexible and lose weight easily use traditional Yogic diet, which consist mainly from fruits and vegetables, grains, rice, organic milk among others. Don’t get scary, Yoga for weight loss – healthy Yogic diet can be extremely tasty and varied.
Later on I will give you healthy Yogic recipes. So with that being said, avoid meat, fish and eggs, any animal flesh including fish. There are lots of modern researches that have proved that vegetarians are always in better health than meat eaters.
Proteins that can be obtain from nuts, dairy products and legumes are of much better quality than meat. I know, I know you are probably sceptical about this one…you know, its normal, so much hype junk is spitted these days out of the TV radio and other form of media that is normal they made you believe the other way. I don’t blame them, the food industry have to make their money, so they can keep maintaining their jets, rolls royses and mansions in the tropical islands…But don’t worry about that now, if you have read so far, that means you are on the right path. Congratulations.
Caveat with diary products. Although milk is not considered “injurious to the yogi”, anyone who has lived for a while on a dairy farm might go as far as questioning the morality of eating dairy products when the milk is taken from a cow whose calf has been taken away and slaughtered.
In these days the animals in the milk farms are treated really bad. They are under stress and ok… you caught me, I’ll admit I do think it’s wrong to strap cows to machines, steal their babies, and pump them full of antibiotics just so we can have yogurt for breakfast… but that’s another topic altogether.) However if animals are treated good in organic farms its ok. Also there are a lots of wonderful milk substitutes out there you can see them here.
Yoga Weight Reduction and Food Combining.
Proper food combining is not very well known topic but it is gaining the attention in the western world very fast now. This is super essential topic and often omitted from many people. And if you really want to stay healthy for life, lose weight easier and make huge advances in your path in Yoga you have to start combining your daily meals properly.
Without going into too much details, Ill try to explain what food combining is in few words. Ok here ya go: Let’s just say that some types of food combine well, while others, because of the difference in the digestive process they require, should not be mixed.
For example, strong proteins should not be mixed with carbohydrates. Lets say you eat cheese and potatoes in the same meal, these two foods will stay too long because are not compatible and your digestive system will delay too much in digest them. Therefore it will cause putrefaction. This won’t nurture your body, instead it will only produce alcohols and venoms in your stomach. Pretty amazing huh.
There are many more approaches to weight loss, dieting, and eating the right food, in the right amount, in the right combination, at the right time, but if you combine all these techniques altogether you will not only lose weight, but you will stay healthy for life, gain flexibility, happiness, strength, muscle tone, sharper mind, body awareness, reduce stress, prevent pain and much more!
